About Knee

Knee is composed of bones, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage, making it susceptible to various disorders and injuries

The knees are complex joints that play an instrumental role in both movement and support. It is composed of bones, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage, making it susceptible to various disorders and injuries. Listed below are some of the most common knee problems that our Orthopaedics Department treats at Subang Jaya Medical Centre:

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury

The ACL is a ligament that helps stabilise the knee and prevent it from moving too far forward or backwards. It is often injured in sports or activities that involve sudden stops, twists, or impacts, such as football, soccer, basketball, and skiing.

Symptoms of an ACL injury include pain, swelling, stiffness, and a feeling of instability in the knee. Depending on the severity of the injury, treatment may include rest, ice, physical therapy, and, in severe cases, surgery to repair or reconstruct the ACL.

Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Injury

The PCL is another important ligament in the knee that helps keep it stable. It is located at the back of the knee and is less commonly injured than the ACL. PCL injuries can occur due to falls, car accidents, or direct blows to the front of the knee.

Pain, swelling, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected leg are some of the symptoms of a PCL injury. There are several treatment options available, including rest, physical therapy, and, in severe cases, surgery.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that is caused by the breakdown of cartilage, the smooth, cushioning tissue that covers the ends of bones. It can occur in any joint, but the knee is one of the most common areas affected. Risk factors for osteoarthritis include age, obesity, and a history of previous joint injuries.

Osteoarthritis of the knee may lead to pain, stiffness, swelling, and a sensation of grating or grinding when the joint is moved. As a treatment option, pain medication, physical therapy, and, in severe cases, joint replacement surgery may be considered.

Meniscus Tear

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee that helps absorb shock and stabilise the joint. It can be torn due to sports injuries, falls, or everyday wear and tear.

In addition to pain, swelling, stiffness, and a sense of instability in the knee, a meniscus tear can cause several symptoms. Rest, physical therapy, and, in severe cases, surgery to repair or remove the damaged meniscus are all possible treatment options.
