Treating Hand and Wrist Conditions Surgical Options

Hand and wrist conditions can range from minor injuries that result in bruising or swelling to chronic pain and issues with mobility. In the Orthopaedic Hand and Microsurgery Department of SJMC, several surgical options are available for treating conditions associated with the hands and wrists. Among them are the following:

“It is worth nothing that surgical treatment is an effective option for treating certain hand and wrist conditions”

Carpal Tunnel Decompression

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that occurs when the median nerve, which runs through the wrist, becomes compressed. This can cause numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand. If non-surgical treatments are ineffective, surgery may be recommended to relieve the pressure on the nerve. Carpal tunnel decompression surgery involves releasing the transverse carpal ligament to create more space for the nerve.

Carpal Tunnel Release

During carpal tunnel release, a surgeon makes an incision in the palm of your hand over the carpal tunnel ligament and cuts through the ligament to relieve pressure on the median nerve. The surgery may be done by making one incision on the palm side of the wrist.

Trigger Finger Release

Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is a condition in which the finger or thumb becomes stuck in a bent position and straightens with a snap, like a trigger being pulled. If non-surgical treatments are ineffective, surgery may be recommended to release the tightened tendon and allow the finger to move freely.

Surgical treatment may be necessary to align the bones correctly and promote healing if you have a fractured hand or wrist. There are several techniques that may be used, including:

Plate and screw fixation of the wrist

A titanium plate is inserted across the wrist fracture and stabilised with screws.

It is worth noting that surgical treatment is an effective option for treating certain hand and wrist conditions. The Orthopaedic Hand and Microsurgery department at our hospital offers a range of surgical options to those experiencing hand or wrist conditions that do not respond to non-surgical treatment. We welcome you to come for a consultation with us if you are interested in learning more about those options.
